Auto manufacturing is essential, should resume under MCO 2.0; over RM10b exports, 700k workforce: MARii

The Malaysia Automotive, Robotics and IoT Institute (MARii) has declared its support for the automotive sector in Malaysia, in light of the challenges the industry has faced since the Covid-19 pandemic curtailed operations in many areas from the beginning of last year.

The technology agency under the ministry of international trade and industry (MITI) aims to support the resumption of the industry’s operations as soon as possible under strict Covid-19 guidelines and SOPs, in light of the industry’s contribution to the national and regional economy, it said.

The automotive industry – including OEMs, parts manufacturers, service providers and researchers – practice a high level of automation and lean production practices which enable better adherence to SOPs laid out by the national security council (MKN), said MARii.

To that end, the most immediately available technology from the agency is the ImmuSafe contact tracing application, which is driven by big data and internet of things (IoT) technologies and has been designed specifically for health management within industries that are operating during the pandemic.

The automotive sector has established itself as an essential sector throughout the pandemic, having contributed RM13.1 billion in exports in 2019 and exceeding RM10 billion until October 2020, said MARii. A workforce of around 700,000 are currently employed in the automotive industry, and this momentum would be significantly impacted should there be another halt in operations which have been adhering to the strict SOPs as prescribed by the health ministry and national security council, the institute said.
