smart EQ fortwo, forfour facelift teased in sketches

Daimler’s city car brand smart has released sketches of its facelifted EQ fortwo and forfour models, which will be making their debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in a week’s time. The two cars, based on the Renault Twingo, are set to go fully-electric with this refresh, after the fossil fuel-powered models bid their farewell with the Final Collector’s Edition.

The sketches, which appeared on Autocar, show a completely revised front end with a much larger grille, taking inspiration from the vision EQ fortwo concept. Flanking it are round fog lights and slim air inlets, along with what look like full-LED headlights to replace the previous halogen units. There are also new two-tone alloy wheels that appear to be more aerodynamically efficient.

Expect a few changes to the rear end and the interior, along with tweaks to the cars’ currently uncompetitive electric powertrains. The British publication suggests that a new battery with a larger capacity could bring range up to or beyond the 200 km mark.

That’s a sizeable increase from the meagre 113 km the current models can muster on the WLTP cycle. Improvements to charging speed should also go on, but it’s unclear if the 84 hp motor itself will see any upgrades. These will be the last smart models to be built entirely in-house by Daimler, with the next generation set to be engineered by Geely, due to enter production in China in 2022.
