UMW Toyota’s Aug 2021 year-to-date sales over 6k higher despite FMCO, full year target being reviewed

UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) sold 2,524 units of Toyota and Lexus vehicles in August 2021, 56% lower than the same month in 2020. However, cumulative sales for the first eight months of 2021 is higher – 38,085 units versus 31,734 units in January to August 2020 – despite the industry shutdown over the last couple of months.

UMWT attributes this to the continued strong sales momentum that started last year, especially with the exemption of sales tax for passenger vehicles, which will go on till December 31. With production and sales back online, the company’s two Selangor plants in Shah Alam and Bukit Raja are now working to clear “a small backlog of orders” that will be delivered “within a reasonable timeframe”.

The company says that the impact of June, July and part of August will have an effect on the full year’s sales volume for Toyota and Lexus, and that its 2021 target is being reviewed. While UMWT did not elaborate, we know that its mission is to overtake Honda this year and reclaim the No.1 non-national spot.

“It has certainly been challenging for us, but we understand the necessity of the actions taken by the government to fight the Covid-19 pandemic. On our part, we have made sure that our workforce has been vaccinated so that we can safely resume and continue our activities at our facilities around the country,” said UMWT president Ravindran.K.

“We will be having sales promotions in the coming months so if you are shopping for a new vehicle, look out for them as you will get great deals and of course, save on sales tax until the end of the year. Our loyal customers are also not forgotten and we will soon announce a new program that will reward them for their loyalty to the brand over more than five decades,” he added.

Speaking of promos, the Toyota Yaris is going for as low as RM493 a month with the EZ Beli scheme, while RAV4 SUV buyers will get a cash rebate of up to RM10,000 in the September campaign. Showrooms are now open, and UMWT stressed that all outlets will follow the SOPs specified by the health ministry.
