Hyundai Casper SUV debuts – 1.0L turbo, NA engines

Hyundai has unveiled its smallest SUV yet, the Casper in an early batch of images ahead of its sales debut later this year. This is to be positioned below the Korean brand’s hitherto smallest SUV entry, the Venue, and early-bird reservations will be opened later this month for customers in Korea.

According to the automaker, the Hyundai Casper was named after a certain kick-flip technique in skateboarding, here implied to signify a “change of direction” in text translated from Korean on its official website. This SUV will be offered at launch with a choice of two engines – a 1.0 litre MPI naturally aspirated petrol and a 1.0 litre T-GDI turbocharged petrol, the latter producing 100 PS and 172 Nm in the i10 N Line.

Official information will be gradually released towards its official debut later this year, but for now its positioning means it will notably wear even more modest dimensions than the Venue’s 4,036 mm length, 1,770 mm width, 1,565 mm height and wheelbase of 2,520 mm, which itself is positioned below the B-segment Kona.

According to the Hindustan Times, the Casper will also enter the Indian market where segment competitors include the Tata Punch, Renault Kwid and Maruti Suzuki Ignis. For India, Hyundai is also rumoured to offer the Casper with a 1.2 litre four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine that makes 87 PS and 120 Nm in the Hyundai i10 Nios.

The Casper has also been tipped to receive an electric version in 2023 – now that will do an impression of a junior apparition. This will come courtesy of a BorgWarner integrated drive module that combines the electric drive motor, gearbox and power electronics in a modular unit.
