The launch of the facelifted Perodua Axia last month brought a new addition, the SUV-inspired Style variant. This sits joint-second from the top of the Axia price list alongside the Axia SE at RM38,890, with the top AV variant sitting at RM43,190.

What does the Style variant offer to the range? Unique to this variant is a host of exterior features, including front and rear bumpers, grille insert with carbon-style surround, black body cladding, decorative roof rails, 15-inch dual-tone alloys, rear reflectors, clear lenses for tail lamps and of course, the Sunrise Orange paint option as seen here. The Style is 15 mm taller, though suspension is standard; the added height is from the one-inch-larger wheel size, plus roof rails.

Also added for the Style variants and above, on top of the feature list from the GXtra one rung below are B-pillar blackout stickers, new design projector headlamps, front fog lamps, rear spoiler with third brake light, Smart Key keyless entry and chrome door handles. The trade-off for the Style aesthetic at the same price as the SE is the lack of front parking sensors, wing mirror-mounted turn signals, solar/security window tint and Bluetooth for the head unit; features present on the SE, and of course the top AV.

Interior-wise, additions beyond the GXtra kit list include black denim-style fabric upholstery (for Style only), while further add ons from this variant upwards include push-button engine stop-start, a white illuminated instrument panel, semi-bucket type seats, detachable rear headrests, chrome trim on the centre cluster, chrome inside door handles and silver-painted door armrests.

The RM4,300 premium charged for the top Axia AV variant brings 14-inch dual-tone alloy wheels and front and rear skirting with gloss black trim, while also adding considerably to its safety kit list. The AV gets the Advanced Safety Assist 2.0 pack which includes Pre-Collision Warning (PCW), Pre-Collision Braking (PCB – a form of Autonomous Emergency Braking), Front Departure Alert (FDA) and Pedal Misoperation Control (PMC), while also adding a reverse camera, in addition to the safety kit list on the Axia SE.

Powertrain for the 2019 Axia is the 1.0 litre 1KR-VE VVT-i three-cylinder engine producing 67 hp at 6,000 rpm and 91 Nm of torque at 4,400 rpm. Transmission is a five-speed manual for the base E and a four-speed automatic for the G variant and upwards, with ventilated disc brakes in front and drum brakes at the rear. Baseline safety equipment on the E variant are dual airbags, rear ISOFIX child seat anchors; the G adds ABS with EBD, the GXtra adding VSC with traction control (new to the Axia) and rear parking sensors.
