2021 Toyota RAV4 Plug-In Hybrid teased, Nov debut
Toyota has teased a plug-in hybrid version of its RAV4 SUV. Simply called the 2021 RAV4 Plug-in, the PHEV will debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show next month.
No tech details yet, just a claim that the 2021 RAV4 Plug-in will be the most powerful RAV4 yet. Currently, the regular RAV4 Hybrid holds the title with a total system output of 219 hp, derived from a 2.5 litre petrol engine and two electric motors.
“Unlike any other, the new RAV4 Plug-in will be celebrated by its spirited acceleration, nimble handling and impeccable style,” Toyota says. The Supersonic Red exterior colour you see in this sole teaser image is new.
This fifth generation XA50 RAV4 is still quite fresh, having made its debut in March last year. The Honda CR-V rival that ASEAN doesn’t get sits on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform, and is powered by 2.5 litre Dynamic Force four-cylinder petrol engines, either by itself or hooked up to two motors in the hybrid.
Rather surprisingly, despite being a pioneer in regular hybrids, Toyota isn’t very big on PHEVs – we can only think of the Prius plug-in hybrid as a Toyota one can connect to the mains.
