Transport Ministry to review JPJ’s decision to stop road tax renewals at post offices in East Malaysia

According to a report by Bernama, the Transport Ministry will review a recent order by the Road Transport Department (JPJ) to discontinue road tax renewals for private vehicles with an engine capacity of 2,000 cc and above at all Pos Malaysia post offices located in Sabah, Sarawak, Langkawi and Labuan.

Transport minister Anthony Loke said a meeting would be held with JPJ director-general Datuk Seri Shaharuddin Khalid this week to determine if the directive was a viable one.

“The instruction was from the JPJ, not the Transport Ministry. I understand that the JPJ did so to reduce the loss of government revenue as there are vehicles which are registered in Peninsular Malaysia but the road tax is renewed in Sabah and Sarawak,” said Loke.

Loke added that he acknowledged the department’s decision to implement the measure, which was done as a way to curb the act of motorists deliberately attempting to avoid paying a higher road tax by renewing their road tax in post offices there. However, he said the interests of the local people in East Malaysia must also be taken into account because they will require places to renew their road tax in areas where there were no JPJ offices.

On a separate note, Loke said the ministry is still studying a proposal to implement the Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) at the Malaysia-Brunei border to monitor foreign vehicles entering the country, especially over traffic summonses.
