Toyota might build a Supra Targa if there is demand

Would you love the A90 Toyota GR Supra more if it were available as a targa top? Well, if enough customers make that request, Toyota could just build them.

In an interview with Best Car Magazine, Supra chief designer Tetsuya Tada opened up the possibility of a convertible version of the model, although he didn’t confirm it will actually happen.

Given the existence of the BMW Z4, the Supra’s (really) close cousin, making a targa version of the Japanese sports car shouldn’t be a hard endeavour, and should be a nice continuation of such an offering – the third- (A70) and fourth-generation (A80) Supra did come with targa tops.

So, if you want to live out your fantasy of that one scene from the The Fast and the Furious, fire up that Change.org account and get those petitions rolling!

For now, the Supra remains strictly a hardtop, and one that can be had with either a turbocharged 2.0 litre four-cylinder or 3.0 litre straight-six engine, depending on the market it’s sold in.

On a related matter, Tada-san also said in the interview that there is a chance that an open-top 86 will be put into production. Such an idea has been mooted for a very long time, and there was even the FT-86 Open concept from the 2013 Geneva Motor Show to gauge public reaction, but nothing has happened since.
